SHANNON GRAYSON

In the wake of the emergency announcement and Langmaid’s rant, a sort of numb silence fell over the center and the residents. Bill shut off the radio, moving in a stilted sort of motion that suggested shock or exhaustion.

People began to drift away. They wandered off to try and find food, or to return to their bedrolls or fumble through tasks in a sort of mindless effort not to consider what they’d just learned. Even Noah wandered off, muttering to himself in something that sounded like gibberish.

The most worrying thing, in Shannon’s mind, was how many people drifted in the direction where Langmaid had disappeared. Two of them were the man in the sweatsuit and the young man in the t-shirt who had spoken in support of the crazed former pool salesman.

Two supporters were two too many, as far as Shannon was concerned. A part of her wanted to try and stop them, but she couldn’t find the energy.

Everything seemed colder and encased in a gray fog of hopeless lethargy. Even the most upbeat figures felt it, including Bill.

There was no help coming. The power wasn’t going to come back on, and the military wasn’t ever going to arrive and get them free. Almost. Because now she knew.

She knew she was free. No one was going to be checking in on her anytime soon. Who was going to care about Witness Protection under these circumstances? No one would care if she went to find Kim. If she left the trucking gig behind and went to rediscover the family she’d been forced to abandon so many years ago.

She knew there was a chance, a high chance, that Andre too was free, or at least would be free soon enough. There was no way a snake like her ex-husband wouldn’t take advantage of the disaster to escape and pursue whatever twisted desires drove him.

She knew Kim was in danger, even if Dennis had managed to connect with her before the power crashed into cinders around them. If Kim wasn’t with Dennis, then she was in greater danger. And there was a chance she might try to make it to Memphis, which would make her less safe, rather than more.

The situation was bad. Bad enough to kill any appetite Shannon might have had and make her head ache with suppressed screaming and the urge to kick something.

But now she knew what she was up against, and as her first teacher in the art of street
